How do I ground a homemade faraday cage?

I want to make a homemade faraday cage to protect against supposed EMP attacks...nothing large. But everything I have read states that you need to ground the cage but no one explains this (in simple terms please I'm not a physicist). What do I need to add to the simple metal cage to ground it?
